Myriophora individual ovipositing into a giant millipede (Narceus sp.). The millipede was clearly agitated and kept contorting itself to dislodge the flies (it didn’t work), then resumed traveling at full speed in an effort to evade them (which also didn’t work). These flies are apparently attracted to the defensive compounds that normally protect millipedes from predation, and tend to attack ones that are injured or dying. I have more pics on my iNaturalist account if anyone is interested. At Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, NY.

Leiobunum sp. in the process of molting. You can’t tell from the photo, but legs were pulsating, presumably being pumped full of fluid prior to straightening and hardening. Amazing to watch, and reminiscent of the Sentinels in The Matrix series. New Paltz, NY.

Larva of the Asian lady beetle (Harmonia axyridis) preparing to pupate. Super common insect (annoyingly so) but I’ve never seen one in this vertical position. I’m wondering whether it somehow facilitates the attachment to the leaf via the anal cremaster, but I couldn’t find any literature on the topic. I witnessed several larvae doing this, so I don’t think this one was unique. New Paltz, NY.
