Leiobunum sp. in the process of molting. You can’t tell from the photo, but legs were pulsating, presumably being pumped full of fluid prior to straightening and hardening. Amazing to watch, and reminiscent of the Sentinels in The Matrix series. New Paltz, NY.

Larva of the Asian lady beetle (Harmonia axyridis) preparing to pupate. Super common insect (annoyingly so) but I’ve never seen one in this vertical position. I’m wondering whether it somehow facilitates the attachment to the leaf via the anal cremaster, but I couldn’t find any literature on the topic. I witnessed several larvae doing this, so I don’t think this one was unique. New Paltz, NY.

North American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) lounging in a tree. At night they travel higher into the canopy to nibble on tender shoots, but apparently fall with some regularity when the small branches snap. Just something to remember if you’re ever walking in a forest at night and hear a crashing noise from above. At @mohonkmountainhouse in New Paltz, NY.

Several weeks ago I found some eggs on one of my artichokes and I thought it would be good fun to try to rear them up. I'm thinking it's some sort of Euschistus but I'm open to suggestions.

A garden springtail (Bourletiella hortensis) on tomatillo. Pestiferous, but easy to ignore because almost impossible to see (1 mm in size). One of these days I'd love to observe the courtship behavior, which apparently involves a male running circles around a female followed by a sequence of head-butting.
