Cicada killer on purple coneflower

Close-up of a cicada killer (Sphecius speciosus). A menacing insect even on a pretty flower. I assume it’s a male because it was patrolling this area aggressively. If you are interested in the biology of this critter, I highly recommend Dr Chuck Holliday’s page on the topic.
